Who are you?
Maybe you’re a music lover who is curious about writing music for personal fulfillment and to better understand the music you listen to, but you only plan to perform for you dog. Or maybe you don’t think of yourself as “a performer,” but you love playing music and would like to accept the challenge of playing an original song at your local open mic night, or you want to write your grandmother an original song for her 90th birthday. Or maybe you’re a music student or professional performer who wants to write music in order to create opportunities, exposure, and a new stream of money-making possibilities. Regardless of background, this course is meant for everyone who is new to songwriting. Some basic understanding of music is useful, but not absolutely necessary. The ability to play piano and/or guitar is also useful, but not absolutely necessary. Other instrumental knowledge (you played the cello in elementary school, or you have GarageBand on your laptop) is welcomed. There have been successful songwriters who only write lyrics and don’t play an instrument at all, so don’t feel limited if you don’t have musical experience in your background.

Who am I?
The instructor for this course is me, Kimberly Peterson. I’m a singer who took the scary leap into the world of songwriting and I’m so glad I did. After completing my Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance at the University of Southern California, I moved to New York. I realized rather quickly that the world of auditioning did not fit.  I wondered about the possibility of writing my own music as a way to take charge of my career, but I figured that if I were destined to write music, I would have been born with symphonies bouncing around in my head. Then (with very little confidence) I just delved in. I wrote my first songs, worked with a songwriting coach, independently released my own album (“Growing Up”), and wrote a one-woman musical (“A Woman Grows in Brooklyn,” which was nominated for a Bay Area Critics Circle Award). If you’ve wondered whether you can write a song, I am here to assure you that you can (and that it’s fulfilling, challenging, fun, and opens up new avenues, too!). FAQ
I'm not musical enough!  Plus, I've never done this before.  Eek!
Everyone has to start somewhere, and I guarantee - you can do this!

I'm worried about being too busy for the course.  How much time will it take?
I designed this course to take place over 6 weeks, but you can easily modify that. You can complete the course in 6 hours, 6 days, 6 months - make it work for you. You don’t necessarily need a solitary cabin in the woods to write; writing exercises can be wonderful 10-20 minute breaks in the office, on the subway, etc. No time spent on this is wasted, and you'll learn by focusing even a few minutes per week on learning this new creative skill.

I don't play an instrument - can I still get something out of this course?
Absolutely! There have been many songwriters who don't play an instrument. You can focus on melody and lyrics, and/or you can introduce yourself to chord progressions using tools such as GarageBand on your computer or iPad, or even YouTube.

What will I get out of this course?
First and foremost, you will get fulfillment from taking on a personal and/or professional challenge. You will enjoy a new creative outlet and open up collaborative and potential money-making avenues (if those avenues interest you).

The nitty gritty (course details):
  • The course comes as a PDF download which includes various links, including songs and videos to supplement your study
  • The course also comes with access to a private Google+ community, where you can ask the instructor questions and connect with peers
  • The biggest thing that you'll get out of this course is a song of your very own!  Let's get started!
