Wednesday Song: "Follow Your Arrow" by Kacey Musgraves

Happy Wednesday Song Day!  Wednesday songs will take a brief hiatus after this week: next Wednesday we're leaving to get married in Half Moon Bay (woo!), the Wednesday after that we'll be returning as an officially hitched couple, and then we're off to an AirBnB in Hawaii for what I'm sure will be a gorgeous honeymoon.  But I can't wait to continue the series in May!

Django was his usual helpful self during this recording - he followed his arrow by digging in his toy bin throughout the whole song, which cause him to bump the camera tripod more than a few times.  Thank you, Django!  (And a real thank you to Brandon, as always, for being cameraman!)

Wednesday Song: "A Way Back to Then" from [title of show]

Here's the third Wednesday song: a new song every week, performed in its raw state with minimal rehearsal, no makeup, and no perfection.  This song is from one of my favorite musicals of all time, [title of show].  I saw this show for the first time during the summer I moved to New York.  My family had come to visit, and as we stood in line at the half price TKTS booth we decided that instead of a big blockbuster, we'd see this smaller off-broadway show that I'd seen an audition notice for in Backstage.  We all adored it.  This song in particular struck a chord, since I had just packed up a Uhaul of my own to "find my part of it all."

When I re-watched the video, I pleaded with Brandon: "wait, but I'm in my pajamas with wet hair, and the end was rushed and a little sharp, and my enunciation..."  He cut me off by saying, "that's the point.  For all the weeks I got my Wednesday songs performed for just me, I never got re-dos."  Sigh.  He was right.  So here it is - pajamas and all!  (And, as you can see in the photo below the YouTube, Django loves to help with the filming.)

Here's the second in a series of Wednesday Songs: a new song each week, performed with minimal rehearsal, no makeup, and no perfection.  Thanks to Brandon for being my camera man (and for snapping a sneaky behind the scenes shot)!  Please join us in laughing at something in the beginning of the video (I have no memory what we were laughing at, but Brandon is pretty freakin funny, so I'm sure it was his fault), and dancing along to some kind of musical van on our block at the end of the video.  And please start a creative Wednesday tradition of your own, then share it with us!

John Lewis: Necessary Trouble

I had chills throughout this interview between Jon Stewart and Rep. John Lewis, a tremendously courageous civil rights leader.  Here is a powerful quote from the second part of the interview - a quote that helps put things in perspective when the details of life seem overwhelming:
John Lewis: I feel that the struggle is not a struggle just for a few days, or a few weeks, months, years - it is a struggle of a lifetime, of many lifetimes.  And I feel more than lucky - very blessed that I’m still here to tell the story, and try to inspire another generation of young people to get out there and push, and stand up, and speak up, and speak out, and get in the way the same way that my generation got in the way.

Jon Stewart: Get in trouble.

John Lewis: Good trouble.  Necessary trouble.

Wednesday Songs: The First in a Series

3/4/2015

A couple of years ago, I went through some old binders from college and was amazed by how much music I learned every semester.  In an effort to keep that musical growth alive, I promised Brandon that I would sing him a new song every Wednesday - something he'd never heard me sing or play before.  It's been a fun practice to keep up, and upon moving to LA last month, I thought: why not videotape and share these?  So here's the first in a series of Wednesday songs - a new song every week, performed in its raw state (a little bit of rehearsal, but no costumes, makeup, or perfection).  Enjoy, and then start your own Wednesday tradition!  Maybe it's a new sketch, song, photograph, or jig in your kitchen - make it your own, and then let us know about it.  This Wednesday song is "Born to Be Blue," a song that my college jazz teacher Tierney Sutton introduced me to.  It has a strange, difficult melody - but I think it's hauntingly beautiful.
